THE MESSAGE
In search for inspiration I’ve been learning new working techniques and as a result came up with this project.
Plants in Action is a series of illustrations that showcase plants in casual situations, in those a human can find theirselves every day. The purpose here is to deliver to the viewer that every little creature in the world, in this case the plants, also have a unique character and personality. Therefore they have a right to live and be protected by human kind.
IDEA DEVELOPMENT
At the start of this project, I have been experimenting with compositions. Searching and finding unique photos and shot structures. Experimenting with found references by combining their prepositions and visual estheuiques, mixing real life references with imagination.
In the end I came up with the idea of doing series dedicated to plants as characters. So simply put, this is a plant character design project which also carries an environmental message.
SKETCHES
After coming up with the final ideas I have moved to Procreate to create my sketches.
During this process I experimented with symmetric grid function in Procreate, tried different compositions and layouts, have tried many character proportion versions and finally narrowed down my sketches to these final three.
VISUAL development
Perhaps one of the most time-consuming processes is the selection of a right color palette for you project. After going through a number of visual references, color-selective websites and color-pallets suggesting pages, I came up with this soft lavender-mint color palette combined with tones of milk chocolate.
For visual development I have transferred my sketches to Adobe Illustrator, as I feel more confident in using this software and I have more technical possibilities.
In this process I came to the fact understanding that as the layouts and compositions of each frame are different, the challenge here was to keep the pieces connected together through the color selections and detailing.
I came up with a variety of color combinations and detailing levels and had to pick the most appealing designs.
THE RESULT
Whenever I do a project that consists of more then one piece, I constantly compare those pieces in order not to lose the overall mood and style. For me the project is finished when I am starting to feel good about myself. Even if some details are note fully complete or something little is missing, if I feel good about it, I leave it as it is. Otherwise I might overdo and make a mess out of it. So it is good to know when is the best time for you to stop.
Thank you for your interest. Let’s keep it green!
